Best of Mike #457

Most of the time the challenge in underwater photography is finding what you want to photograph. It’s a big ocean and pretty much everything is moving… so you go with the flow and get excited about what you get.

But sometimes the challenge is of a different nature.

This guy is a Roughhead Blenny… and he is wee. Maybe about 1/3 the diameter of the eraser on the end of a pencil.

We find them in perfectly round holes that have been bored into concrete blocks (for boat moorings) or coral heads in shallow water.

They stay pretty close to home (in fact I have never seen one out of his hole) so once you find one you can count on them being there every time you go back to that spot.

The challenge with this guy is getting a good pixture. I will need a “tack sharp” image because he is so small that no matter how close I get… I am going need to blow it up a lot so you can see it.
